Unintentional Week Off!

I worked one day this past week. One. As I mentioned in my previous post, I started to feel sick last weekend. Well I went to work on Monday and it became progressively worse through out the day. I came home and slept for three or four hours. It was awful. Between my sinus congestion, aching body, and getting chills/hot flashes... I knew I wasn't going to make it to work on Tuesday. I had made sub plans before I left work on Monday and told my principal to go ahead and get me a sub. I hate using my sick days because we don't get maternity leave (no I'm not pregnant yet!), so I have to save those days for the future. But I just couldn't help it. Blah. I hate sickness. Anyway, I stayed on the couch all day Tuesday, it was glorious. On Wednesday the day began with freezing rain and a forecast that called for snow and worsening conditions so school was called off. We received about seven and a half inches of snow on Wednesday and were out of school Thursday and Friday as well!! So I was given plenty of extra time to recover. It was awesome! I got tons of stuff done around the house. I cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom and went through the junk drawer (does everyone have one of those? or is it just us!?). It felt good to throw away things we didn't need. The house finally feels organized. I've made it my goal to declutter. I would feel much better coming home to a calm, organized house... especially after the chaos of my job! It's definitely an on-going project, those closets are a daunting task! I also went into work today after church. I wanted to go through the things that the substitute left behind and rearrange the desks. It was a pretty productive week even though I only "worked" one day! I've got a full week of work ahead so I'm going to go enjoy my last moments of relaxation! Have a great week lovelies!

Winter Blahs

Sorry for the lack of posts this past week. Life is at that kind of blah in between state... You know what I'm talking about? When you are looking forward to a lot of things that may happen in the months to come but there is nothing really exciting happening now? That's how I've been feeling lately. I am looking forward to a lot of things that aren't going to happen for awhile (if they do happen at all). I am excited about the possibilities of the future and am having a hard time focusing on life right now. I'm not really sure what to do about it. I know I should be focusing on what actually is happening right now, unfortunately nothing too exciting is going on... I guess it's the winter blues? I need a snow day to cheer me up! =)
In other news, I've been to two baby showers this month. One for one of my best friends, the other for my sister-in-law. They are both approaching their due dates. My sister-in-law is schedule for a c-section on February 15th! I can't wait to meet my new neice, Carly!
Well I guess that's all for now... I know it's a short post but I'm not feeling well today. One of my sweet students was telling me on Friday (while coughing all over me) that he wasn't that sick he "just has a fever!" Say what?! Haha... oh second graders. I woke up yesterday with a slight cough and a little chest congestion. My immune system has held up all school year, with the exception of one sinus infection. I guess the germs were bound to get me at some point this year!

January So Far

Wow. January is already an insanely busy month! As an elementary school teacher, I am not a huge fan of January. It is very hard to get back into the groove of things at work after having 2 weeks+ off. I also dislike January because it is a month filled with mid-year testing. I hate doing mid-year testing and the kids don't like it either! It also happens right around the time that report cards are due so it's extremely busy and stressful. I am contemplating starting classes this summer for my Library Media Specialist endorsement. This endorsement would allow me to work as a school librarian... What could be better than teaching kids to love reading all day without having to worry about assessing them? Being a classroom teacher is centered around assessments now and it's hard to fit in anything fun. I don't know.... just something I'm thinking about....
Other than the crazy busy work schedule things are going pretty well. Hubs' basketball team has won their last three games. One of the games was won by one point with less than 5 seconds to go... I missed that one, unfortunately... buzzer beater games are intense! I made it to the last game and they won in overtime. It was a very exciting game. I love watching my husband coach. He is so good with his players and so knowledgeable about the game. I am such a proud wife!
At home we still have a guest room filled with Christmas presents that haven't been put in their proper places and there are tons of closets and drawers that need to be organized. I think I need to start my spring cleaning early this year! I am also working on a new blog page that will be added to this blog once it's complete. I can't say much more about it right now but hopefully I can reveal it sooner rather than later! Well I'm off to grade papers and do some laundry. Have a great week everyone!

2011 Goals

Hey friends... hope you all had a fabulous New Years! Hubs and I went to a friends house but I started feeling sick around 11:30 so we left early! Stupid wisdom teeth removal... I haven't been able to eat much and my stomach was getting queasy. Blah. I still have some pain on the left side, so your continued prayers are appreciated! =) Now moving on from my whining, time for 2011 goals!
1. Spend more time with God. I think that this will always be a goal for me because who can ever say that they spend too much time with Him?? I just want to be more reliant on God in my life. I am a worrier and I hate that about myself but if I develop a closer relationship with Him I am confident that my faith with be greater and my worries will be less!
2. Simplify. Be more organized at work and at home. This is a very broad goal but I'm somehow going to figure out how to stay organized in all areas of my life. It's easy to get behind at work, especially with grading papers... I hate to grade papers... I teach second grade, I know you are thinking how hard can it be? But I am meticulous about being fair and often go back over papers to make sure that I was fair to everyone when grading something that doesn't have one right answer. On the home front, we are in desperate need of a shredder. I want so badly to go through our files and shred the old papers/bills that we don't need and organize the ones that we are keeping. I also want to go room by room and clean out each closet because I think we keep a lot of stuff that we don't need. These items could be donated to Good Will. Le sigh. Will I ever accomplish this goal? This half of the goal might be reserved for summer break!
3. Get back in shape and eat healthier. At the end of September of 2010 I was probably in the best shape of my life. I stopped running after my 5K. I still haven't decided how I feel about running. It's definitely a love/hate relationship. I would love to say that a goal for 2011 would be to continue running but I just don't know if I have the motivation for that. So I'm keeping it simple, I'm going to make it a goal to exercise a few times a week, eat less chips and more fruits and veggies, and drink more water.
4. Blogging more is definitely a goal for this year. Life gets so hectic but I need to remember that blogging is how I'll remember and keep track of all of life's hectic moments in the future!
5. Read at least 12 books this year. I am fairly certain that I met this goal last year as well. I flew through Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books over the summer. One book that I read at the end of 2010 that I LOVED was by Donald Miller, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. It was so good. Hubs bought me a copy of it for Christmas and I already want to reread it! I might do a book review on it later this month! Here's what my 2011 book list looks like so far (more will be added, hopefully The Help and Mennonite in a Little Black Dress among others) :

6. Take more pictures. I realized that I didn't take many pictures in 2010 so this year I want to do a better job of capturing moments... I mean, I didn't even take a picture of us with our new house last year! Epic fail.
7. Live intentionally. I want to make sure that I am living a meaningful life. I don't want to go through the motions of every day. I want to live life on purpose. Create a more interesting story. Or as Donald Miller would say, "It's a good calling, then, to speak a better story. How brightly a better story shines. How easily the world looks to it in wonder. How grateful we are to hear these stories, and how happy it makes us to repeat them."
Well I think that's enough goals for now. More may be added in the future as I think of them and as I read all of your wonderful goals for this year! I love getting ideas from other bloggers and reading about your hopes for 2011!

2010 in Review

A little look back at 2010...
It started off with a lot of snow. We got 2 feet sometime in January or February.
Snow days are the best! It was a glorious 2 weeks off from work! =)
I flew in an airplane for the first time in my life in June. Yep, it was that teeny, tiny plane behind us!
We drove halfway across the country (from Virginia to Oklahoma) to visit family. Here I am in front of a herd of buffalo in OK.
While we were there we went cat fishing....
...and caught lots of huge fish.
We saw some gorgeous scenery....
... caught a baseball game....
and hung out with some prairie dogs! =)
We went camping at the lake again at the end of the summer....
Part of our little family (missing: Mason, our chocolate lab, and Fitch, our cat).
I began running in June and continued training through September. I ran my first 5K at the Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach at the end of September. (I'm in the blue, 1379).
Cheesy post race photo. I accomplished my goal of running the whole thing without stopping to walk! Woohoo! =)
I also hiked Humpback Rocks again with my sister in October.
The leaves were gorgeous!

This is just a small snapshot of what 2010 looked like for me. One major event that occurred that I didn't include in pictures (because for some reason I don't have any!) is the purchase of our first home! We bought our house at the end of May. It was a very busy summer filled with unpacking, painting, settling in, and traveling. The year ended with a little surgery, wisdom teeth removal. Not fun, but I'm surviving... bringing in the new year with swollen cheeks!
Thanks for sticking with me through another year! Happy 2011 everyone! I'll be posting my goals (not resolutions) for 2011 soon!
